Reviews

Doug Wilder was first introduced to Blackbird Vineyards in 2005 when he was working for Vinfolio. He was tasked with finding up-and-coming wine brands in the United States and fell in love with the 2003 Blackbird Merlot after a tasting with Founder, Michael Polenske in San Francisco. Since then, Doug has reviewed every vintage of Blackbird. It was only appropriate to invite him to review the first ever Blackbird members-only wines - BlackMail Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc.

  • Purely Domestic Wine Report

    92 Points

"The nose is a supple cascade of polished black fruits and an undercurrent of chocolate. The palate offers pure Cabernet character of plum, currant, spice, licorice and oak. Again, this wine will benefit from several years of aging. Drink 2020 – 2033."

2014 BlackMail Cabernet Franc

  • Purely Domestic Wine Report

    94 Points

"A pure expression of currant, mocha and earthy loam. Once the wine is open for a while (or decanted) it will begin to express its dense complexity on the palate that is at least a few years from where opening it will make sense. It is a gorgeous wine though right now it feels almost primordial. Drink 2020 – 2025."

"The nose is a focused cherry, polished red currant and spice. The palate is beautiful on entry with plenty of well-defined black cherry, licorice and spiced plum. Drink 2017 – 2025. "

  • Purely Domestic Wine Report

    95 Points

"A beautiful lively nose of boysenberry, licorice, florals fresh currants and herb. The palate is beautifully concentrated with a firm mid-palate of currant, herb and blackberry. Possesses impeccable purity in the core with silkiness, coupled with great length. What Cabernet wants to be when it grows up. Drink 2016 – 2030."

2013 BlackMail Cabernet Franc

2013 BlackMail Cabernet Franc

  • Purely Domestic Wine Report

    91 Points

"The nose is dense with chocolate, plum, spice box, wet stone and blueberry. The palate is a spicy prune plum on entry with a leaner more refined core. Firm cedar and tannins persist, it is youthful and angular early softening the edges with aeration, albeit in a sturdy structure. Drink 2017 – 2030."
